Just had to let you folks know about the crazy world of road racing in Wales.
The Aberdare road races have been going since the 50's. When I say roads, well something close anyway. The race track is actually the perimeter road of the local park. Its just less than a mile in length and features some interesting sweeps up and down. There is no run off....unless you are good at slaloming in between trees, flower beds, and rose bushes. Get it wrong at the S bend and you could end up in the boating lake
The track is reasonably wide, maybe 10 to 12 foot, and the top boys can average over 80mph. Lots of different classes, but the most impressive had to be the quads. The front runners were drifting the quads through a quick corner complete with blue smoke coming off the tyres. If they'd got it wrong then trees wrapped in straw bales were awaiting them.
Alan Russell was racing and managed second in the 400 race, excellent result for his first visit. Ian Lougher (of TT and Irish Road racing fame) put on a good display. Cracking weather and lots of spectators.
A very different event that was good fun to visit, but can't see myself entering!
